The original Variations VII took place at 9 Evenings: Theatre & Engineering in the 69th Regiment Armory in New York, in October 1966. Variations VII was intended to transform an architectural space into a broadcast space, in which telecommunications technologies such as radio, television and open telephone lines would bring global media transmissions and the urban environment of New York City into a live performance.
\nTheatre & Engineering Alongside, radios and televisions collecting sounds, there were 10 phone lines connected to city locations including a dog pound and the New York Times press room. Other microphones were attached to household appliances such as a juicer and a blender. There were also Geiger counters and short wave radios. Photoelectric cells triggered different sound sources off and on as the performers moved around. The aim, said Cage, was to \u201cgo fishing\u201d for sounds.<\/p>\n

On 29 February 2008, John Cage\u2019s iconic performance Variations VII was performed in the UK for the first time, a performance which was also its European premiere and the first time it had been performed outside of the USA. The performance took place at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, as part of AV Festival 08, and was performed by Newcastle duo, :zoviet*france:, Salford musician Matt Wand and Japanese-American musician, Atau Tanaka.<\/p>\n

For Berlin the artist will work an a new version tailored especially for the city.<\/p>\n

At the beginning of the presentation of the sommercamp results, on 14 August 2009<\/strong>, :zoviet*france: Matt Wand and Atau Tanaka<\/strong> will perform \u201cVariations VII\u201d<\/strong> at the Berlin radialsystem<\/strong>, in real time linked with 10 different places in Berlin and their sounds.
